Overhauls and Rebuilds
Equipment overhauls can be very challenging in the modern factory environment.
'Production' may well not want to give you, the Maintenance Manager, the equipment for the that well-overdue rebuild, regardless of how much it needs it and despite what you tell them about the risks if you don't do it. They want the equipment in fully-functioning order, but naturally they don't want you to make it unavailable. What usually ensues is a negotiation; you tell Production (or Planning/Scheduling) how long you need the machine for, they gasp at the ridiculousness of the request for the maintenance outage and tell you you've got maybe half of the time you requested to do it in. Maybe you go back again with an updated plan shaving a few days off here and a few days off there and, if you're lucky, the negotiation will put you somewhere in the middle.
And next you've got a new problem:

You've got the production outage, but have you got the labour in your team available to do the work in what is now a very small window? Probably not. No modern factory want's to pay for more engineers than is absolutely necessary to keep the wheels on the factory (or possibly just keep putting the wheels back on!) so when it comes to doing overhauls you already know that you're going to struggle - there just isn't enough manpower.

But you know it's got to be done. No-one (aka Production) is going to care next year when the machine breaks down and you say "but I just didn't have enough men available!" - they're just going to reply that they gave you the maintenance window (they will have conveniently forgotten that they shortened that window!) and it's your problem if you didn't use the time wisely.
